Chairman, Enugu State Handball Association (ESHA), Emmanuel Asogwa has hinted that hosting the first edition of the South East Handball Championship is the association’s primary target, highlighting the significance of early preparations ahead of any major competition.

He made this disclosure over the weekend at the handball court of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium. Speaking to newsmen after the tune up game between Team Enugu and Team Anambra, the sports administrator revealed that the zonal rep would have to endorse the competition before it begins, explaining that finance and sponsorship has been tasking and challenging.

Asogwa, who is also the Chairman Nsukka Sports Club further hinted that they are have some relatively young and exciting players that they are working with while the secondary school products from the prudent energy handball project are also making remarkable progress in their development.

Representing the Commissioner, Enugu State Ministry of Youth and Sports, Hon. Manfred Nzekwe, the Director of Organizing, Mr. Boniface Onovo noted that the approval from the state government is a major factor that would determine the state participation, availability of funds and how many sports that would be participation in any national competition, stating that the last time the state participated in more than 20 sports was in eko 2012.

However, Team Enugu defeated their fellow southeast counterpart from Anambra State 28-21 in a scintillating and thrilling encounter that was witnessed by the ministry officials, sports enthusiast, coaches of different sports, fans and supporters of handball within and outside the stadium complex.
